Clear Out the Old
The first step to cleaning a kitchen in preparation for spring and summer should be to say goodbye to things that are cluttering up the kitchen, ranging from old food in the pantry and fridge to piles of mail on the countertop. Take some time to sort through the jumble and get rid of all those things that are expired or that you no longer need.
Clean Your Appliances
Before you do a thorough wipe down of your walls, windows, floor, and countertops, clean your appliances first. If you don't have a self-cleaning oven, spray a non-toxic oven cleaner and leave it to soak while you tackle other appliances in the house, including your refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher. Make sure you use surface-safe cleaners, open a window to ventilate fumes, and opt for cleaners that are natural or organic for optimal safety. Additionally, make sure that whatever cleaning brush you choose to use is gentle enough that it won't damage surfaces. Cleaning the inside of your garbage cans during this step is also recommended.
Sweep, Mop, and Wipe
Clearing out clutter and cleaning out appliances are the two hardest steps of kitchen cleaning. After you've completed them, give yourself a pat on the back and prepare yourself for the final phase: sweeping, mopping, and wiping countertops and windows. You probably do these things on a regular basis anyway, which hopefully means your spring cleaning sweep/mop/wipe will be quick and efficient.
Once your kitchen is sparkling clean, place a vase of fresh flowers on your countertop or kitchen table to add a pop of spring color to the room.
